The skin naturally produces sebum (oil) in the sebaceous glands, commonly known as sweat
glands. This oil when produced in normal amounts acts as a natural moisturizer for the skin, keeping it clear and healthy. If the sebaceous glands become over-stimulated, they will produce an excess of oil. Too much oil attracts bacteria and blocks the pores, resulting in the red, and often painful, bumps call acne.Types of Acne:
Non-inflammatory. This is the most commonly occurring acne and shows up as either “whiteheads” or “blackheads.” When the excess sebum and bacteria are trapped below the skin’s surface in a closed pore, tiny white spots form. These are called whiteheads and are sometimes too small to see. Blackheads form when the clogged pore remains open, allowing the sebum to oxidize and turn a brown or black color. Non-inflammatory acne is usually more annoying than painful.
Inflammatory. This type of acne occurs when a blocked pore ruptures below the surface and the infection spreads to the surrounding pores. Painful red bumps form just below the skin’s surface. Sometimes these will slowly form a white cap and are referred to as “zits” or “pimples.” When the infection goes deep, nodules or even cysts can form. These are extremely painful and will last for several days, often resulting in unsightly scarring.
What causes the sebaceous glands to produce too much oil?
A variety of influences are to blame, such as genetics; exposure to harsh chemicals found in hair products and cosmetics; and increased hormone levels during puberty, pregnancy, and even menopause. Although it’s typical to suffer from acne as a teenager, many adults are affected as well.
What’s the best treatment for acne?
The skin is designed to grow new cells and expel the infection on its own, but this can be a very slow process and the painful acne spots can last for days. Santalia skincare products are uniquely formulated with natural oils to soothe the inflammation and speed up the healing process.
